In Fall 2009, DTE's Andrew Butler and a group of collaborators volunteered to make theater with DTE students. After speaking with Martha, the group decided to focus on issues of "transition"- that is, how do we get from one place to the next? Whether moving from high school to college, from school to the workforce, or from one stage of life to the next, what are the thoughts and feelings that go along with these transitions? What are the resources available to help us make them? How do we channel all of this into an engaging piece of theater while we learn about performance?
After that pilot program, DTE continued the workshops in the Fall of 2010, under the direction of Andrew and fellow DTE Teaching Artist Samara Gaev. Students learned performance skills- acting, spoken word, music and movement- while devising original work about these questions of transition.
The group also met with special guest speakers from a variety of fields- college admissions experts, local businesspeople, and professional artists- who offered guidance and possibilities as the young artists thought about their future.
The company presented their piece to an audience of friends, family, and local youth at PS 15 in Red Hook (special thanks to Jose Cordero and Mel Bowers of the Beacon/PS 15 for arranging use of the space!).
In Spring 2011, In Transition returned, performing a completely new piece to kick off the Red Hook Fest, opening for professional spoken word/multimedia duo, Climbing PoeTree.
The company continues to create and perform original works of hip hop theatre.
